Taking Care Of Our Furry Friends

Taking Care Of Our Furry Friends

From Cate Martin

Just a reminder that there are great resources out there for you and your pets.  Thanks to low cost vaccination clinics it is now affordable to have multiple pets.

The Humane Society of Charlotte located at 2646 Toomey Ave, Charlotte, NC 28203 has their Critter Care Clinic every Wednesday from 8:00–1:00.  There is no appointment necessary.  From my experience, there is very little wait if you go closer to noon.

Stand for Animals is located at 224 W 32nd St, Charlotte, NC 28206 also has a Wellness Wednesday with low cost vaccinations.  Appointments can be made online.  They typically they are very good about staying on schedule.  You may have to schedule 2-3 weeks out.

Both clinics sell heartworm prevention and will microchip your dog for around $20.

Did you know that Animal Care and Control Officers don’t want to take your lost dog to the shelter?  If your dog is wearing a tag or is microchipped, Officers will bring your dog home rather than to the shelter.  This saves you the citation fee of getting your dog out of the shelter and a lot of unnecessary stress on you and your pet.  A tag with your info and/or a microchip is definitely worth it.

Feral cats can get fixed for free!  Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri. at the Gary t deLisser Spay/Neuter Clinic (Animal Care and Control) located at 8315 Byrum Drive, Charlotte, NC 28217   Cats must be brought to the clinic in a trap and must have a carrier to be put in after surgery.  Check-in is at 8:00am and pick up is at 3:00.  No appointment necessary.

It is recommended to bring your pets inside when its 40 degrees or colder.  Pets get cold too and can develop hypothermia and frostbite.  A crate is an easy solution for bringing dogs inside at night.  If your pet spends lot of time outside, please make sure their shelter is packed with dry straw.  This can be purchased at Home Depot for about $6 a bale.

If you are in need of additional or no cost spay/neuter resources please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to direct you.  cate1868@yahoo.com
