The Education Committee of CharlotteEAST focuses its efforts to support three eastside schools: Merry Oaks International Academy, Eastway Middle School, and Garinger High School. Carol Sawyer coordinates efforts at Merry Oaks International Academy (MOIA) .
While the schools receive extra funds to support academics, they don’t have the PTA funds that support the extras in wealthier schools like awards and incentives for students, and perks that help staff feel appreciated.
Here are three ways to help support Merry Oaks staff and students:
1. Donate to the CharlotteEAST Merry Oaks International Academy support fund. These funds will allow us to purchase items for a staff appreciation event/s, student recognitions, and other items to support students and staff.
2. Ask area business to donate gift cards that we can give to teachers and staff. We have a sample “ask letter” and a log of requests so that we don’t duplicate efforts.
3. Provide treats to staff. Our goal is to show our appreciation to staff in small ways throughout the year. This first quarter we’ve provided baked goods each staff member at least once – from bags of cookies to bus drivers, to plates of goodies at grade level meetings. Become a Heart Math Tutor at Merry Oaks International Academy
Elementary students at Merry Oaks International Academy eagerly await volunteer tutors for the 2023/24 school year! Many CMS’s elementary school students are performing below grade level in math and individualized support is needed now more than ever. Volunteering with Heart Math Tutoring is a fun, effective way to make a difference by working one-on-one with students each week. Volunteers say that it’s the highlight of their week! With the support of a Program Coordinator on-site at Merry Oaks, volunteers use an easy-to-follow, proven curriculum featuring interactive activities and games. You don’t need to be a math wiz to tutor! Volunteers commit to tutoring for 30 minutes or one hour per week. Sign up today and choose Merry Oaks International Academy and time that works for you.
