MOIA FAQ winter 2024 – please review if you have questions.
These recent questions came from neighbors about the school. Ryan met with Principal Telfaire and here is what they discussed. Please bring your follow-up questions to the Winter General meeting on Feb 28 and she will address them.
1. Are there openings in the MOIA preschool next year? If so, is there an income-based eligibility requirement?|
Yes, MOIA’s Bright Beginnings Pre-K program has no income eligibility requirement and open spots.
2. Are there before- & after-school enrichment programs? If so, is there an income based eligibility requirement?
Yes, through GEP, and income does not determine eligibility but rather a sliding scale to determine the price. Partners include Charlotte Ballet, Clay Works, Girl Scouts, Capoeira, Lacrosse, and Soccer organizations all on-site.
3. What Advanced Studies programs are available? (Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG), Talent Development (TD), etc.)
We have a TD program with a dedicated teacher onsite 3x a week. Students are checked in K and tested in 1st to enter the program. Students with aggregate scores also qualify. Students can also jump grades for classes in specific areas where they excel.
4. Are there clubs?
Yes, 6 special areas are media, music, art, technology, farm/agriculture, and PE.
5. What is the status of the separate brick building and the trailers?
Pre-K is currently in the lower brick building and the mobiles are in use. The lower brick building will be demoed when the new Pre-K wing is built. The Multi-Language Learner team does classes in a couple of the mobiles, and some TD overflow. Donations for kids are also stored there.
6. What is the status of the Farm Grant? Is there a time frame for the project to be completed?
Phase 1 is to be completed on May 17th (this is all the structures in the courtyard) with a proposed Community Day in conjunction with The Bulb on May 18 to show everything off. Eastway and Garinger may also be showing off their programs on the same day so be sure to mark your calendars!
